In the cool of the double night, the astronaut followed the shaman’s directions. There, on a moonlit patch of high desert, he found it: a cluster of plants said to hold the voice of the planet-god itself.
Under his feet, a game of cat and mouse played out as it had for centuries before his arrival, and would long after be left.
The astronaut edged closer to the cactus to collect a sample, unaware that he too was being hunted. That the moment he set foot on this planet, he joined its food chain.
