There’s no telling what ancient wisdom was lost as the dark cloud of Christianity rolled across the planet, obscuring and absorbing pre-Christian traditions. One theory that swirled out of this unknowable past is that our modern Christmas (with Santa and his reindeer) has roots that stretch back to the snowy forests of northern Finland.
Allegedly, the red and white Amanita Muscaria mushroom and the reindeer native to the region inspired our modern image of St Nick.
The tradition of a Yule Goat also spans multiple pagan traditions in Northern Europe, though the exact relationship between this gift-bearing goat and Krampus has also been lost in the mists of prehistory.
